After much thought and consideration, ASWB has decided to extend registrations for candidates whose Authorization to Test expires during the COVID-19 public health crisis time frame. Rather than using our standard three-month extension period, we have decided to extend registrations for those candidates affected by the closures related to COVID-19 through December 31, 2020, when possible and for those states/provinces where approval expiration dates permit.
We are being strategic in deciding to extend registrations to the end of the year: With the varying registration and approval expiration dates that we are managing within our system, we believe we will significantly reduce the number of registrations that we would otherwise have to update more than once. We are asking our member boards to extend for the same period or authorize ASWB to extend those candidates on your behalf.
Pearson VUE anticipates a significant backlog for all professions once testing resumes. We have no way to estimate how long it may take for Pearson VUE to clear out that backlog. Because of graduation, the coming months typically have a high volume of candidates scheduling for testing. Therefore, further delays are possible.
To give you a sense of the gravity of the situation, this is a snapshot of what we are dealing with right now. Nearly 5,700 ASWB candidate appointments were canceled because of the 30-day suspension of test delivery at Pearson VUE test centers in North America. Of those, 437 have registration and state/province approval to test expiration dates expiring before April 16, 2020. We are focusing on this group and need to get these individuals extended as soon as possible to allow them the opportunity to schedule appointments. Next we will focus on the approximately 2,600 who may be affected because they have expirations tied to their board approval expiration dates. Please be aware that these numbers may grow because of other factors not yet known, such as availability for scheduling and whether Pearson VUE extends the testing suspension beyond April 15.
